5 Card Draw Poker Strategy
5 card draw is a simple poker game that can be very fun at times. In the same time 5 Card Draw poses a whole different set of dilemmas to most poker games: Keep the ace, or have the extra card to try to get 3 of a kind? Keep the pair or go for the flush? Questions I am sure many people have asked themselves when playing this game that you wouldn’t find elsewhere.
Even the best guidebooks won't make you a World Series of Poker champion. In order to achieve success you have to master different strategies and simply play as often as possible. We can only draw your attention to a few basic but at the same time extremely important things you haven't though about or realized of before.
Be patient and play wisely.
When you get a hand like A234J you are tempted to discard the Jack and hope with all your luck that a 5 comes up. This rarely ever happens and when you think about it you only have a 1/13 chance of getting it.
If you hold some weak cards and you think they may be worse than those of your opponents - simply fold. When you have no pair, no draw, or nothing that you can reasonably see happening without a whole lot of luck don't call it. If you don't learn when to fold you will end up losing great amounts of money. It's not worth playing every cards.
Know your opponents
Watch your opponents game and try to determine the style of their game - it will allow you to take right decisions. Decide whether they are careful but at the same time aggresive players (tight-aggressive) or, on the contrary, whether you have to do with an aggressive maniac (loose-aggressive) who bet and raises regardless of cards they hold. Poker is not only about your cards - it is reading your opponent and their behaviour as well as a trial of estimating their hand. If you are successful in determining your opponent, it will make the game easier and significantly increase your chances of winning.
You get 1 draw in this game and that can tell you a lot about what an opponent has.
a. If they draw 3 it means they have either a pair or lower hoping to get either a 3 of a kind or hit one of the high cards they have. Most people will draw 3.
b. If they draw 2 then you might be in trouble. The main reason someone would draw 2 cards is because they have 3 of a kind. So if someone drew 2 and then raised you probably don't want to go against it with your 2 pair. But be careful someone might just draw 2 to make you think they have a 3 of a kind.
c. If they draw 1 they either have 2 pair or they are going for a draw. If someone draws 1 and then checks they probably missed their draw.
